Points to Remember

Given below are some important points:

  • Angiosperms are the only flowering plants of the plant kingdom showing large differences in their morphological segments-roots, stem, and leaves

  • Roots are the anchorage organs that help in the fixation of plants into the soil.

  • The stem provides support to the plant and bears leaves for photosynthesis.

  • The leaf is a lateral, generally flattened structure borne on the stem. It is the main photosynthetic organ.

  • The arrangement of leaves on a stem is called phyllotaxy.

  • Compound leaves are of two subtypes- Pinnate and Palmate compound leaves.

  • Flowers possess two accessory whorls calyx and corolla and two essential whorls androecium and gynoecium.

  • The arrangement of flowers on the floral axis is called inflorescence which is of racemose and cymose types.

  • The fruits are of three kinds- simple, aggregate, and composite (or multiple).

  • The dispersal of seeds and fruits has three agencies such as air (anemochory), water (hydrochory), and animals (zoochory)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the ‘Shoot system’?

Shoot system is an aerial and erect part of plant body which grows upwards.

  • What are the main functions of leaves?

1. The leaves make food for the plant by photosynthesis. 2. The leaves get rid of excess water from the plant through transpiration. 3. The leaves carry out the process of respiration in plants.

  • What is ‘Taproot’?

Tap root is a thick root which grows straight into the ground with many small roots sprouting laterally. The main function of taproot is to absorb water and minerals to the plant.
